Mount Sinai cancer researchers to present several landmark studies at ASCO meeting

Mount Sinai School of Medicine researchers will present several landmark studies, including data on treatment trends in late-stage cancer, a promising multiple myeloma vaccine, and predictive models of soft tissue sarcomas, prostate and bladder cancer, at the 2012 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting June 1-5, 2012 in Chicago.

Highlights of Mount Sinai research at ASCO:

L+M, Dana-Farber to partner in $35 million cancer center

Mohegan — Lawrence + Memorial Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute have reached an agreement to partner in a new $35 million cancer center scheduled to open in 2013 in Waterford.

L+M President and Chief Executive Officer Bruce Cummings announced the partnership Saturday night during the hospital’s 100th anniversary celebration at Mohegan Sun.

“It’s official. It’s been the poorest-kept secret for a very long time,” Cummings said. “It will be an affiliation that will offer an unprecedented range and depth of cancer services right here in our own backyard.”

Susan G. Komen for the Cure® Targeting Full Spectrum of Cancer Treatment with $58 Million in 2012 Research Grants

DALLAS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–

Susan G. Komen for the Cure®’s 2012 research program takes aim at early
and late stage breast disease while seeking answers in early detection,
cancer prevention, and socioeconomic issues that often make breast
cancer outcomes worse in minority and medically under-served women.

Komen today announced $58 million in new research funding for 2012, augmenting
the $685 million that the organization has invested in breast cancer
research since 1982. Komen is the largest non-profit funder of breast
cancer research outside of the U.S. government.

“A special focus this year is on making sure that all women get the
right treatments from the outset,” said Komen President Elizabeth
Thompson. “This might mean no treatment, or very limited interventions,
for lesions that might never develop into cancer. At the other end of
the spectrum, we want new therapies that promise a full, high-quality
life for women with advanced and metastatic disease.”

SOUTH BRUNSWICK — Sherrie and Michael Wells fully understand the need to support pediatric cancer research. Their son, Brady Michael, died in July 2010, just three weeks shy of his second birthday, from acute undifferentiated leukemia.

Women Bond Over Breast Cancer Battles

Three women developed a life-long bond after helping each other through breast cancer treatment, 10TV’s Andrea Cambern reported.

Ronda Sobotka, Diane Kukula and Julie Valencia celebrated their one-year anniversary of being breast cancer survivors on Tuesday.

When the women got the bad news last spring, the diagnosis shook their worlds.

“I was shocked.  I found the lump myself,” Kukula said.

Son's work for breast-cancer awareness is his mother's legacy

He would sell pink shoelaces to raise money for the 22d annual Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, set for Sunday, Mother’s Day, in Philadelphia.

“I just wanted to make her proud,” said Nicholas Celenza, 15. “I wanted to promote breast-cancer awareness and early detection so no one would have to go through what my family went through.”

With help from Celenza’s father; 23-year-old sister, Erica; and 19-year-old brother, Anthony 3d, nearly 1,500 pairs of laces have been sold since March, bringing in about $6,000. The laces, whose cost was donated by Chapman Auto Stores in Philadelphia, have been available at retail outlets such as the Haddonfield Running Co.
